For a Bengali, I have a very bizarre name. The teacher’s in my school always used to stutter while calling me. Kids made fun of my name. I always thought of changing my name once I’m older.
My professor says, name is the first social construct we have with society. A Contract that we did not agree upon or have any power over. Usually it is decided by parents but in my case it was another level of advancement. My grandfather chose my name!
-Why did you chose such heard to pronounce name, dada (grandpa)? Qur-ra-tul ! Too many syllable!
-Because, I like the meaning behind it. It was tough to call you ‘apple of my eyes’ in my own language. But I wanted to tell how special you are to us.
So there you go. This is how I made my first identity with the community. Being named Qurratul Ayen 🙂
