I live in a very patriarchal society in which women are considered inferior to men. Therefore, beating a woman is not punished, especially if she is the wife of the man who does it.
It is commonly accepted in my country that women do not need to go to school. And when they do go to school, they have much lower wages than men when they have a job.
All of this is possible because machismo is very deeply rooted in society. Everybody agrees that men are superior to women, hence the contempt that the female sex constantly suffers from the male sex.
