To grow up in a traditional and extended family and in the heart of a popular culture with its aesthetics and warm conditions means that you grew up in a world of stories, a system of ‘values’ and a fertile language full of proverbs and methaphors. It means that your memory is full of imagination that is formed and shaped in the smallest details of life starting with your personal name. Naming a new baby in this cultural space carries a thousand of ideas, stories, and questions at the same time. It is not an easy and not a complicated matter, but it boils down to a buried struggle about power and authority. Who has the honor to name the baby? And how to set priorities in choosing who will have this honor? “naming a new baby.” The Creteria may be based on gender( husband/wife), The criterion might be related to social/eco position (your rich uncle), and it can be all about age (grandfather). But soon, the matter turns into an election campaign in which all family members start debating and arguing about the suggested names. Then democracy will triumph, and everyone leads to a more democratic solution … Writing names on piece of papers, closing them well, then choosing one …. The name of the new baby, who will accompany him throughout his life, who will, to a great extent, shape his/her identity is on one of the closed papers … This is exactly my story with my name ‘Adil’. It is an Arabic name derived from the Arabic term “Al-Adl” which means “Justice”.
